Posted on 15 April 2026

Tuesday 28 April 2026

Update - 5PM

Firefighting operations at Hathernware Industrial Estate in Sutton Bonnington have now concluded following the significant fire which began on Wednesday 15 April. Crews worked continuously over a 10-day period, maintaining 24-hour operations, before leaving the site late on Saturday 25 April. Periodic checks are continuing to ensure the area remains safe and that there is no risk of re-ignition.

The response involved 105 fire appliance attendances, including multiple visits from the same fire stations from across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Services, supported by 13 specialist appliance attendances, demonstrating the scale of the incident.

Work is continuing with partner agencies to support the recovery phase. Rushcliffe Borough Council is now the main point of contact for any further information and guidance, with updates available via Update on Sutton Bonington fire - Rushcliffe Borough Council. Additional advice from NFRS for those affected can also be found via things to consider after an emergency.

Crews have also remained active within the community, providing reassurance and fire safety visits to residents, alongside information sharing events and property visits. A further programme of engagement with local businesses will take place through the Fire Protection Business Engagement Team, who will conducting Business Reassurance and Engagement Activity (BRAE) visits with local businesses in the area tomorrow.

We would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation, and all partner agencies for their continued support throughout this incident.

Update - 4:30pm

Residents of Sutton Bonington are invited to a drop-in session tomorrow (Friday 24 April 2026) at the Sutton Bonington Village Hall to discuss any concerns regarding the on-going incident at the Hathernware Industrial Estate.

This will take place from 2pm until 5pm and representatives from Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, the Environment Agency, UK Health Security Agency and Rushcliffe Borough Council will be in attendance.

This drop-in will take place in the Committee Room and attendees should access this area of the venue via the car park entrance.

The latest update from UK HSA colleagues, who have set up a dedicated air quality cell, is that the risk to public health in the area is low. This will continue to be monitored.

Dr Samia Latif, consultant in health protection for UKHSA East Midlands, said:“We understand the public may feel concerned as any smoke or odour is unpleasant and can be an irritant.

“Whilst smoke continues to be present in the area, residents and businesses are advised to avoid smoke where possible and continue to stay indoors, keep doors and windows closed, and follow updates from the fire service for further advice and information.

“Odours do occur following a large fire, but the levels at which people detect odours are often well below those levels which are harmful to health.

“The air quality risk to public health from this incident has been assessed as low and we continue to work with partners to monitor this.”

Some substances present in smoke can irritate the lining of the air passages, the skin and the eyes. Respiratory symptoms can include coughing and wheezing, breathlessness, sputum (phlegm) production and chest pain.

Chemicals in the smoke can also worsen existing health problems such as asthma. People with cardiovascular and respiratory conditions may be particularly susceptible and should carry and use their medication, including inhalers, as usual.

Anyone experiencing symptoms such as coughing or breathlessness which they believe may be related to smoke exposure should contact their GP or call NHS 111. In an emergency, call 999.

Wednesday 22 April 2026

Update - 11:45am

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service remain in attendance at the incident at the Hathernware Industrial Estate in Sutton Bonington.

A multi-agency coordination group continues to oversee the response and recovery phase of this incident. Partners including the Environment Agency, Rushcliffe Borough Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, UK Health Security Agency, Network Rail, and members of the Local Resilience Forum are working closely together to reduce the impact on the local community and bring the incident to a conclusion as soon as possible.

While most of the fire has now been extinguished, there remain pockets of deep-seated fire and hotspots buried within significant quantities of waste material across the site. This continues to present challenging firefighting conditions.

To support these operations, specialist plant machinery has been sourced directly by the fire service to allow waste material to be moved and broken down, enabling crews to access and safely extinguish remaining hotspots more effectively. Firefighters are maintaining a 24-hour response at the site.

Due to the complex nature of the incident, it remains difficult to predict when the fire will be fully extinguished. Firefighting operations are expected to continue for several more days.

Smoke from the site is currently minimal but may vary at times depending on ongoing firefighting activity and weather conditions. The UK Health Security Agency has assessed the risk to public health as low. As a precaution, residents and businesses in the local area are advised to avoid any smoke where possible and continue to keep windows and doors closed.

We recognise the concerns of local residents and businesses and want to reassure the community that all partner agencies are working hard to minimise disruption while bringing the incident safely to its conclusion.

Area Manager Matt Reavill, of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We have now maintained a continuous 24-hour response at this site for nine days. Although most of the fire has been extinguished, there remain significant operational challenges due to deep-seated hotspots, which require the use of heavy plant machinery to access safely.

“Alongside this, we are carefully managing the environmental impact of our operations, particularly due to the railway line running directly adjacent to the site.

“As well as ongoing firefighting activity, crews and staff from our service will continue to engage with residents, providing reassurance and advice where needed. We fully understand the continued impact this incident is having and remain committed to resolving it as quickly and safely as possible.”

Update - 5:44pm

The incident in Sutton Bonington has now been scaled down to four fire engines, thanks to our crews who have done a brilliant job tackling this blaze. Residents who were displaced earlier today are reminded they are now able to go back to their homes and travel disruption should be starting to ease off. Thank you to colleagues from Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service for supporting us at the scene and, importantly, thank you to our partner agencies right across Nottinghamshire who have worked with us to manage this incident and bring it close to a conclusion.

Update - 3:06pm

Firefighters are still on scene at this incident, but our attendance is now being scaled down from the 13 appliances that we have had in attendance for the last two hours.

Following the initial call at 10.47am, there was a significant smoke plume that forced closure of nearby railway lines due to visibility issues and the threat from exploding cylinders.

However, the fire is now surrounded and the rail lines have now been fully re-opened.

People living locally are still advised to keep windows and doors closed, and not to be alarmed by any loud bangs heard in the area.

There have been multiple agencies involved in this incident all working together, as one, to keep people safe and bring this to a swift conclusion.

Thank you specifically to colleagues from Leicestershire and Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Services who have come across the border to help us tackle this blaze.

Update - 1:50pm

Firefighters from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire & Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Services are currently in attendance at a large, on-going fire on the Hathernware Industrial Estate, Sutton Bonington.

The call to this incident came in at 10.47am and at the time of this update, there are around 13 fire appliances on scene tackling this blaze.

The fire involves wooden pallets, lorry trailers, industrial units, cylinders and tyres and is putting out a significant smoke plume which has forced agencies to close part of the nearby rail line.

Members of the public are being asked to stay away from the incident if possible. Those living nearby are being urged to close doors and windows and be wary that local transport networks are likely to be impacted.

Anyone living nearby is also told not to be alarmed by any loud bangs coming from the incident ground - these are due to the cylinders which are on fire.

Fire crews are being supported at the incident by Nottinghamshire Police, East Midlands Ambulance Service and Network Rail.

More updates will follow in due course. We expect to be on the scene of this fire for quite some time.
