Supporting the Armed Forces

We have signed the Armed Forces Covenant (opens in a new window) which is a promise by the nation to make sure that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

NFRS advertises all its job vacancies on armed forces leavers websites and guarantees a job interview to all ex-forces personnel who meet the essential criteria. We provides 21 days of fully paid leave, plus further uncapped unpaid leave, for reservists and adult cadet volunteers. This is one of the most generous employer offers in the region. We have also set up an employee support network.

NFRS supports Armed Forces Day and Reserves Day. We carry out joint operational exercises with the forces and hold the Ministry of Defence's Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award.

To be considered for a Gold Award, employers must have signed the Armed Forces Covenant and already hold the Silver Award. They must have a range of measures in place to support the armed forces including a relationship with the MoD, positive policies towards defence people issues, and leave for reservists for training or other requirements.

NFRS has established a dedicated position to drive the Covenant pledges and, in particular, to support reservist employees. She is an ex-regular who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this role.

The Fire Service is immensely proud of its people, especially those who have served their country or who continue to do so. With a diverse and broad range of employees who have served across the range of defence people, the Service thoroughly understands and promotes the strengths that this experience and knowledge brings to the organisation.
