Joint Approach To Support Neurodiversity

Posted on 04 April 2025

On Friday 21 March, we partnered with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue, Nottinghamshire Police, Derbyshire Police and the University of Derby at a joint neurodiversity celebration week event to highlight both the strengths and difficulties of those with neurodiverse conditions.

The joint conference was organised with the aim of bringing together a diverse range of speakers, organisations and experiences so that we could learn more about neurodiversity and start new conversations around it with our peers.

A range of talks from staff and officers at the organisations featured across the day, covering their personal experiences of ADHD, OCD, Autism, and Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dyspraxia.

The day couldn’t have been a success without its range of speakers who were willing to open up about their personal strengths and struggles and highlight the range of experiences they’ve had.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Damien West said: “It was a real pleasure to open this fantastic event and my huge thanks the University of Derby for hosting the day.  The day was not only about celebrating Neurodiversity, but also about sharing experiences, learning and a commitment to take action on making sure our places of work are truly inclusive, where all our staff can be their best!”
