Over 1000 homes visited in two days following the Fairisle Close incident

Posted on 01 December 2022

Following the tragic incident in Clifton on Sunday 20 November in which a mother and her two young daughters lost their lives, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has been visiting residents to offer reassurance and home safety checks.

Firefighters and staff from all areas of the Service visited a total of 1091 homes over two days, offering fire safety advice and checking people’s wellbeing.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service undertakes community reassurance following every house fire, but this was a much larger activity than usual due to the deep impact the incident has had on local people.

Over the two days on 28 and 29 November, 250 homes were given a Safe and Well check and residents given advice on how to keep fire safe in their home. 145 smoke alarms were fitted in houses where there were none, batteries had gone, or alarms were not in right place.

Thanks to the generosity of the owners of The Fairham pub, the Service’s Prevention team had parked their outreach vehicle in the car park over the two days and were at the Southchurch Drive community centre on two other days, for the Service to speak to anyone who needed support.

Station Manager Dan Palmer, District Prevention Manager, said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Fatoumatta, Fatimah and Naeemah following this tragic incident.

“The community of Clifton has pulled together following the fire and we want to thank residents for their kindness and support as we have been visiting them in their homes.

“This activity has made a real difference to keep people safe in their homes, and we would like to remind you to test your smoke alarm regularly. If you or someone you know is not able to assess the fire risks in their home, please visit our page to book a Safe and Well visit.”
