Recruitment process

Wholetime process - September 2023

The recruitment process will run differently to how we have done this in the past. We have made these changes to shorten the process for applicants that go through it and to ensure all applicants meet the required fitness standard.

Anyone who wants to apply will need to attend one Recruitment Day, where they will take part in the bleep test. Only people who pass this fitness test will be eligible to apply.

All our Recruitment Days can be found on Eventbrite.

Below lists the timeline for the process.

Candidates who meet the selection criteria are required to attend one Recruitment Day. Candidates can book themselves onto a recruitment day on Eventbrite from 20 September 2023.

The recruitment day will consist of:

  • Presentation from the Service about the role
  • Fitness test (bleep test) Candidates who achieve the required standard 8.7 (42 V02 max) level will be sent a link to the application form.
  • Varied job related tests

Week commencing 20 November 2023

All candidates successful at the recruitment days or who have registered their interest will be required to undertake a telephone sifting process including On Call applicants. This process will be conducted by Futures and further information will follow.

Dates: 4 December 2023 to 15 December 2023 (Monday - Friday)

Venue: Service Development Centre, Dukeries Complex, Main Road, Boughton, NG22 9JE

All candidates who are successful through the fitness test and the initial telephone sift will be invited to the job related tests.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service on-call candidates will not be expected to complete this assessment.

Dates: 15 January 2024 to 9 February 2024 (Monday - Friday)

Venue: Antenna, 9A Beck St, Nottingham NG1 1EQ.

Candidates successful through the job related test stage will be invited to an interview and presentation.

Dates: Weeks commencing 19 and 26 February 2024.

Venue: Nottinghamshire Police and Fire and Rescue Service Joint Headquarters, Sherwood Lodge Drive, Nottingham NG5 8PP.

Candidates who are successful through the medical, swimming assessment and the pre-employment checks will be required to be available for the start date of this course.

This will be a 13-week course held at the Service’s Training and Development Centre in Ollerton. You must be able to travel to the training centre as a requirement of your appointment.

Venue: Service Development Centre, Dukeries Complex, Main Road, Boughton, NG22 9JE

Candidates identified for this course will undertake medicals, swimming assessment and pre-employment checks at a future date.

As stated above this will be a 13-week course held at the Service’s Training and Development Centre in Ollerton. You must be able to travel to the training centre as a requirement of your appointment.

Application criteria - wholetime:

  • You must live within one of these Borough/District Council areas: Mansfield District Council, Ashfield District Council, Bassetlaw District Council, Newark & Sherwood District Council, Gedling Borough Council, Broxtowe Borough Council, Rushcliffe District Council, Nottingham City Council. Unless you are or have been in the last three years, a serving member of the Armed Forces (or you are the direct relative of somebody who serves or has served).
  • You must be aged 18 or over on the date, your training course begins.
  • Hold a level 2 qualification in Maths and English (GCSE A* - C or 4-9 or equivalent). You will be required to provide evidence of this if your application is successful. If you do not hold the qualifications required and you would like more information on how you can complete these please contact Futures via the link Futures short courses who will be able to provide support with this. Existing Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service on-call firefighters will not be expected to provide evidence of qualifications.
  • You must be confident in and around water and be able to swim the length of a pool - minimum 25 metres.
  • Have no known phobia of heights or confined spaces.
  • You must be able to attend a three-month-long training course at our Service Development Centre. The dates of this course are non-negotiable.
  • You must be able to travel between stations as and when necessary - bearing in mind you could be posted anywhere across the county. Whilst it is not a prerequisite to apply there is an expectation that you will obtain a driving licence within 2 years of joining the Service. This is because you can be required to serve anywhere and will regularly be detached to different stations in the county.
