NFRS 2023 86 - Rural fire fighting

You asked for

FOI Request:- Given there is currently no 5 year plan in place for BESS fires:-

  1. I’d be glad to see a list of your typical south Notts fire fighting vehicles thatwould be deployed to a massive rural fire in terms of
    • Weight, fully loaded
    • Height
    • Width
    • Length
    • Turning circle distances
    • Number of axles / wheels
    • Typical length of hose used to connect to a dry riser?
    • Can you draw water from a stream/ brook?

These sites will be remotely monitored (London/elsewhere) and secure fenced/ gated, which present a clear risk to speed of response. So:-

  1. Who in the Notts fire service would hold keys and a map of these sites accesspoints and water resources?
  2. If no one is a key holder what recommendations do you propose to help speedup a response?
  3. Are you allowed to use bolt cutter to access a locked/fenced commercial site?

    • Typical length of hose used to connect to a dry riser?

Answer: - This can vary due to the incident. We carry lay flat hose on allpumping appliances (lengths of 20 – 25m) that can be connected together tomake the appropriate length of hose required.

    • Can you draw water from a stream/ brook?

Answer: - We are able to access open water supplies from streams/brooks aslong as there is an appropriate depth and flow rate to maintain suction for thepump. This will be determined at the incident and will vary depending on thelocation and the time of year due to flow/depth.

  2. Who in the Notts fire service would hold keys and a map of these sites accesspoints and water resources?

Answer: - We gather risk information through our standard procedures and scoringmechanism. The level of risk information will determine what information is held on ourmobile data terminals and available to all response crews. Our highest risk sites willhave site plans and water supply information including open water sources andpressure fed supplies, as well as key codes and contact details for keyholders for sites where appropriate. It is not standard practice to hold keys for sites due to the difficulty in keeping these up to date when locks are changed, as well as not being able to guarantee which appliances will attend incidents.

  3. If no one is a key holder what recommendations do you propose to help speedup a response?

Answer: - Please refer to our response in question 2.

  4. Are you allowed to use bolt cutter to access a locked/fenced commercial site?

Answer: - Yes, as per Section 44 of The Fire and Rescue Service Act 2004
