NFRS 2022 57 - Disposable BBQ's and Sky lanterns
You asked for:
I am writing to submit a formal request for information under the Freedom of Information Act.
I am conducting research into the impact of disposable BBQs on people, animals, buildings and the environment across the UK. I am carrying out this research on behalf of Keep Britain Tidy, who are currently campaigning to remove ignition risks from the environment.
I request to be supplied with data on the causes of fires reported to Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, including but not limited to those started by disposable BBQs, cigarette litter, broken/discarded glass bottles and sky lanterns. I request that this data is broken down at least by month, for the last 24 months.
If available, I also request information on the duration and damage caused by those fires and the cost incurred by your service.

Answer: - Please refer to the Excel spreadsheet (xlxs, 23Kb) provided.
Please be advised in relation to ‘sky lanterns’, no records could be located whereby the cause of the fire was determined or suspected to be ‘sky lanterns’. Therefore no information is held in regards to the matter.
Note: the source of ignition is not recorded for outdoor fires. To clarify for grass fires you would not record whether it was started by a discarded cigarette in a specific recordable field. Instead the information supplied in those instances are where recorded comments or radio messages have made note or possible sources of ignition.
