Fire Service Reminds Communities About Kitchen Safety Following House Fire

Posted on 28 November 2025

Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service is reminding the public about staying safe in the kitchen, following a house fire in Strelley.

Firefighters from Stockhill and Eastwood Fire Stations attended the incident at 9:07am on Wednesday morning (26 November 2025) on Jasmine Close, Strelley.

Crews quickly brought the fire under control. One elderly woman, aged 94, was taken to hospital to be checked over and is now in a stable condition.

The fire started in the kitchen of the property after eggs were left cooking on the hob - which is why Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service wants to highlight the importance of taking extra care when cooking.

Station Manager Richard Booth said: “Kitchen fires remain one of the most common causes of house fires in the UK. Simple steps, such as never leaving cooking unattended, keeping flammable items away from hobs, and ensuring appliances are switched off when not in use, can make a big difference.

“In this case, a telecare system played a vital role by alerting the emergency services quickly, which helped ensure the resident received assistance as soon as possible. This is something the fire service advise if you have vulnerable relatives and neighbours.

“If you feel like someone you know would benefit from a Safe and Well Visit, then please complete the online form on our website.”

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents to:

 • Stay alert while cooking and never leave it unattended

• Keep your kitchen clear, and remove flammable items away from the hob

• Avoid drinking alcohol while cooking as it can increase the risk of fire

• Test your smoke alarms weekly

• Know what to do if a fire does start – get out, stay out, and call 999
