Stapleford honoured after work with men’s mental health charity

Posted on 20 December 2023

Stapleford Fire Station have been honoured with a painting after their work alongside a local men's mental health charity, Enlighten The Shadows.

The charity, which supports over 500 men in the UK and internationally, and fire station first started working together after a post on Stapleford's Facebook page about the White Ribbon campaign.

Enlighten The Shadows was founded in 2020 by Rory Green after the tragic miscarriage of his baby, which sparked depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. He wanted to encourage men to speak more openly about their mental health and get the support they need.

There are plans to create a men's mental health group at Stapleford and possibly use the fire station's community room as a base. These sessions will allow men to talk openly about mental health and resilience, and learn more from firefighters about fire safety.

Training and support has been offered to firefighters at Stapleford, with the charity seeing a positive shift in how open the crew have been in talking about their mental health.

Firefighters often come across traumatic incidents and there is a wide range of support available both inside and outside the Service.

As Stapleford were very engaged in support for Enlighten The Shadow's work and in appreciation for all they do in the community, they felt compelled to offer them a painting.

Steve Rose, Safeguarding and Domestic Violence Lead at Enlighten The Shadows, said: "Don't be afraid to speak out. Always speak to somebody. Whatever happens there is someone there who will help you.

"We look forward to continuing our work with Stapleford to make a positive difference on men's mental health."

You can learn more about Enlighten The Shadows' work or contact them for support on their website: www.enlightentheshadows.org

We know Christmas can be a difficult time for some people so please reach out if you need support.
