Stapleford gains quality mark for supporting unpaid carers

Posted on 02 October 2023

Stapleford Fire Station has gained a carer friendly quality mark from Nottinghamshire Carers Association (NCA) for its ongoing support for unpaid carers.

The station has undertaken additional training to be able to signpost carers on to the support network.

The training was put to good use when the crew recognised a member of the public who they had come across at an incident. They went straight back out to her address to complete a Safe and Well visit and able to sign post her to some support she needed. She had become an unofficial carer for a neighbour who had some complex needs but desperately needed some support herself.

Diane Naylor, Community Engagement Worker at Nottinghamshire Carers Association, said: “Congratulations to Stapleford Fire Station on gaining the NCA Carer Friendly Quality Mark, for your ongoing support to unpaid family Carers in your community.

"Your team have completed the NCA Carer Awareness training and been very supportive, proactive and positive with ideas and changes in mindset when making your Safe and Well visits, which makes such a difference to all the carers you have met, and going to meet.

"Thank you to Kevin Tedds and Gavin Wilson for also becoming Carer Champions – being the leads for carers, connecting your team with information and support to help carers in your community, and keeping up to date with community links and NCA. Well done!”

Crew Manager Kev Tedds of Stapleford Fire Station said: "We're delighted to be recognised with the carer friendly quality mark, so we can do our bit to help those who help others.

"As a fire and rescue service and station, we go out regularly to check fire safety in people's homes through our Safe and Well visits so this training will help us identify people who need extra support."

“If you or someone you know is vulnerable and would like a free Safe and Well visit, please visit Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service’s website."
