Partner Working To Reduce Smoking Related Fires

Posted on 14 August 2025

Since 2020, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has attended 228 fires which were caused by smoking materials, including e-cigarettes.

Fire Service staff have been working closely with the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Smoking and Tobacco Control Alliance to educate the communities of Nottinghamshire about the dangers that come with smoking.

So far in 2025, firefighters have responded to 21 fires caused by smoking materials, with 15 of those being in a property - we are working with our partners to reduce these incidents.

Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Smoking and Tobacco Control Alliance has produced a set of short films which best describes the work they do to help people stop smoking. Their team joined ours when delivering a Safe and Well Visit - the below video brings you on the journey from arriving at a property to leaving, with everything in between, including fitting and checking smoke alarms, and explaining the dangers of fire by smoking indoors.

We know that telling our communities to smoke indoors is perhaps not something people are likely to follow, but we want you to do this safely:

  • Always keep matches, lighters, and cigarettes out of reach of children
  • Never smoke if you have taken medication, drugs, or drunk alcohol which makes you feel tired
  • Never smoke in bed
  • Always use an ashtray
  • Fully extinguish your cigarette before disposing it

E-cigarettes might be the latest trend, but we don't think it's trendy to find out that your habit has caused a fire in your home. Please follow our top fire safety tips:

  • Only buy e-cigarettes from reputable retailers
  • Do not use counterfeit goods
  • Never mix components of different e-cigarettes
  • Never leave it charging overnight or when unattended
