Rushcliffe resident donates pictures of former firefighter Dad to Fire Station

Posted on 11 September 2023

Brenda, her daughter Susan, and her nephew presented framed photos of her former firefighter Dad to West Bridgford Fire Station in August.

The family were invited to the Station to meet crews, look around the fire engine, and reflect on family memories.

Brenda's father, William Fredrick Harrison, who was Super Intendent at the West Bridgford Urban District Council, served from the latter period of the Second World War.

Following the visit, Brenda said "Many thanks to West Bridgford Fire Station for sharing the images of my father and keeping his memory alive.

"Joining the fire service was my dad's way of contributing to the war effort, as well as his fellow firefighters. The fire service was then based in the Urban District Council yard, on the road off the crossroads of Abbey and Eltham Roads, West Bridgford, which is now being turned into a housing estate.

"The visit stirred a lot of memories for me, and was an unexpected and moving way of remembering my father."

Watch Manager, Sam Featherstone, said "we were so happy to welcome Brenda and her family onto Station, and learn more about her father's time serving the communities of Nottinghamshire.

"The Watch learnt a lot, and we are proud to hang the images up in West Bridgford Fire Station."
