Win A Picnic Hamper This Summer In A Bid To Reduce Outdoor Fires

Posted on 01 July 2025

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging the public to choose a picnic over a barbecue as part of a new outdoor fire safety campaign launching today, Tuesday 1 July.

Running throughout July and August, the campaign highlights the dangers of careless behaviour during hot and dry weather - especially the use of disposable barbecues.

To support our campaign, we're giving you the chance to win a picnic hamper filled with treats. The competition is open to everyone and runs until Friday 1 August 2025.

In the past seven days, firefighters across Nottinghamshire have attended 22 outdoor fires, and with the temperatures rising, this number is expected to increase.

While some of these fires are started deliberately, many are the result of careless behaviour, such as using disposable barbecues irresponsibly, failing to fully extinguish cigarettes and leaving behind litter, specifically glass bottles, which can ignite fires in the sun.

If and when you head out this summer, please remember our fire safety tips to help prevent outdoor fires:

  • Avoid disposable barbecues, especially in woodland areas
  • Take your litter home, especially glass
  • Fully extinguish cigarettes and dispose of them properly
  • Use designated picnic areas where available
  • If you see a fire, call 999
