Notts Team compete at British Firefighter Challenge in Liverpool

Posted on 02 August 2024

This year's British Firefighter Challenge was hosted by Merseyside Fire and Rescue right in the heart of the city of Liverpool between the iconic Liver building and Cunard building on Water Street. Hosted alongside Liverpool Pride, the event was packed full of excitement and energy.

For firefighters Jude Brough, Dan Brookes, Phill Woods and Ryan Wheatley from Hucknall on call, this was their first time attending the Challenge - and they won very respectable times in both their individual races and coming 7th in their team relay.

Firefighter Mary Amos from Arnold Blue also smashed her first British Firefighter Challenge after a great success winning a silver medal last year in Wales and coming in 7th place overall in the female category.

Firefighter Micheal Foster from Retford Black watch, managed to knock 40 seconds off his individual race in Manchester last year.

Team Captain WM Christopher Trendowicz from Fire Investigation came 6th in his age group and survived a fall down the stairs on the tower in the Outlaws relay race.

As always, showing true strength and that age is just a number, Retired Station Manager Martin Malloy, despite being plagued by injury, narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in his age category.

Note worthy and in true team spirit from our neighbouring service, Firefighter Matt Kirkman from Derbyshire FRS Ripley on-call who has been training with the Notts team finished his individual race under his predicted time and Firefighter Lou Needham from Derbyshire FRS Green watch Ilkeston, who has also been training with the Notts team, stepped up to make up the numbers for the Outlaws relay team.

Team captain WM Trendowicz said “I couldn’t be more proud of this team.

"They have worked so hard over this last year, training with other services, working around injuries and other commitments. Not one of them left the course with anything left to give and with the knowledge and experience they have gained from this year, I’m confident we will see some of them on the podium winning medals in the years to come.”

Up next will be the Cheshire Virtual Challenge in September... watch this space!
