Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service Launches First-Ever Internship in Partnership with the Black Achievers Awards

Posted on 09 February 2026

Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service is proud to announce an exciting new opportunity for young people committed to leadership, inclusion, and creating positive change. In partnership with the Black Achievers Awards, NFRS is launching its first-ever paid internship, awarded to the winner of the 2026 Aspiring Star Award.

Community and Education Officer, Guninder Nagi said: “I’m honoured to be working alongside the Black Achievers Awards to support and celebrate the incredible talent within our communities. Creating genuine opportunities for young people to thrive is something I’m deeply passionate about, and this collaboration allows us to turn recognition into real‑world experience. I’m excited to welcome the award winner into our organisation and to play a part in their journey as they take this next step in their personal and professional development.”

The internship is open to young people aged 18–25, offering the chance to work closely with NFRS to shape a personalised programme aligned with their aspirations, availability, and future goals. While the role does not involve operational firefighting, the intern will have the opportunity to attend “Have a Go Days” to gain insight into the Service’s operational work.

How to Apply

Young people are invited to self‑nominate by submitting a 500‑word statement. Nominations are also welcome from those who wish to put forward an aspiring leader who would be a great fit.

The statement should cover:

  1. Why they are interested in the internship — including what appeals to them about NFRS and this opportunity.
  2. Their background — highlighting skills, experiences, achievements, and contributions to diversity, leadership, or inclusion.
  3. Their future goals — and how this internship will support their development.

Applications must be submitted to theblackachieversaward@gmail.com by Tuesday 31 March 2026.

The successful intern will be required to undergo a DBS check, and if based at Joint Headquarters, a Police vetting process. Applicants should demonstrate strong communication skills, basic IT competence (email, document creation, presentations), and enthusiasm for learning.

The internship will provide training within one or more NFRS departments, with a focus on Organisational Development and Inclusion.

NFRS is committed to increasing diversity within its workforce and strongly encourages applications from underrepresented communities. Reasonable adjustments will be made to support applicants with disabilities.

The internship will run for a minimum of six months and up to a maximum of 12 months, depending on the successful candidate’s availability and development needs. Interns will be paid at least the National Minimum Wage, or the National Living Wage for those aged 21 and over.
