NFRS Highlights Kitchen Fire Safety Following Cooking-Related Incidents

Posted on 06 June 2025

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) is urging residents to exercise increased caution in the kitchen following a series of 20 cooking-related fires across the county in May—40% of which were attributed to items being left unattended on cooktops and hobs.

Amy Goulden, Head of Community Safety and Engagement said: “Almost half of the cooking fires we attend are due to people leaving things on the hob unattended. We know life can get busy, but the evidence shows if you can keep looking while you’re cooking, you’ll significantly reduce the fire risk.

“Using timers and alarms is another great way to make sure you don’t forget and can help those with memory issues especially.

“If you are worried about a loved one’s cooking practices we’d encourage you to undertake a fire safety assessment with them and get tailored advice following this link Book a Safe and Well Visit

Top Kitchen Safety Tips from NFRS:

  • Never leave cooking unattended, even for a short time. If you must leave the kitchen, turn off the heat.
  • Keep hobs and worktops clear of flammable items like plastic tubs, tea towels, and refuse.
  • Use a timer to remind yourself that something is on the stove or in the oven.
  • Keep a working smoke alarm fitted and tested – ideally one in the kitchen and on every level of your home.
