Two women were rescued from Gunthorpe Lock last night by emergency services after getting into trouble in the water.
At 10:29pm yesterday (Tuesday 15 July), Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene at Gunthorpe Lock after receiving reports of a woman struggling in the water.
Firefighters from Bingham, Carlton, Newark, and Highfields Fire Stations were mobilised to the incident, with support from East Midlands Ambulance Service and Nottinghamshire Police.
Upon arrival one woman could be seen in the river – firefighters from Carlton entered the water and swam to the casualty, successfully rescuing her and bringing her back to safety.
The Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB), which is stored on the Service’s two Specialist Rescue Unit’s (SRU), was deployed to continue the search for the second female. She was later rescued by firefighters, however, was found unconscious. Thankfully, after given treatment by East Midlands Ambulance Service, she gained consciousness.
Station Manager Chris Navin, who was also officer in charge at this incident, said: “Through the amazing work of our crews and fellow emergency service workers, we were able to rescue the two women and bring them both to safety. I am relieved that this incident didn’t end in tragedy, but it very easily could have.
“Open water may look calm, especially late at night, but it can also be unpredictable. We advise that when around any type of water, you are aware of your surroundings and don’t go too close to the edge.
“If you see someone in trouble in water, never go in after them. Call 999, give them your exact location, and leave it to the professionals – this way, you’re not risking your own life too.”
