Firefighters Conduct Large Water Exercise
Posted on 10 October 2025
Yesterday (Thursday 9 October), firefighters from across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire took part in a major water rescue training exercise at Spring Lakes Watersports & Leisure Centre.
The exercise, known as ‘Exercise Yankee’, simulated a large-scale emergency in which multiple casualties were reported missing in or around a body of water. Crews worked together to search the area, rescue those in difficulty, and account for everyone involved.
The scenario was designed to put a wide range of skills to the test, including specialist water rescue techniques and search procedures. Crews also used drones in collaboration with the Mountain Rescue Team to support the search effort.
Firefighters from several stations across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire took part, alongside colleagues from our partner agencies.
Watch Manager Vickers said: “Exercises like this allow us to practise complex rescues, strengthen our partnerships with other agencies, and make sure we’re fully prepared to save lives when every second counts.
“Water-related incidents are a key area of focus for the Service, with us regularly responding to water incidents and flooding. Exercises like this one ensure crews are confident and capable when those calls come in.
"Members of the public are also reminded to stay safe near open water, especially as temperatures begin to drop. Simple steps — like keeping a safe distance from the edge, never entering water to attempt a rescue yourself, and knowing how to call for help — can make all the difference."
