Crew Manager To Walk Up Snowdon Wearing Full Fire Kit And BA

Posted on 26 February 2026

On 11 April 2026, Nottinghamshire Crew Manager Lou Needham will take on an extraordinary physical and mental challenge: climbing Snowdon while wearing full fire kit and breathing apparatus (BA), relying solely on the air in her cylinders except for a single five‑minute hydration break each hour.

The challenge aims to raise vital funds for PTSD999 and the National Red Plaque Fire Service Memorial, two causes close to the hearts of many in the emergency services community.

The event, known as the ‘Fire Walk’, has deep roots within the Needham family. It was first completed in 1986 by Lou’s father, Dave Needham, alongside a colleague from West Bridgford Fire Station. Their climb raised funds for the Fire Service Benevolent Fund—now the Fire Fighters Charity—and Nottingham City Hospital’s Burns Unit, completing the ascent in just under three hours.

The challenge was repeated only once more, in 2010, when two firefighters from Nottingham’s Central Fire Station completed the trek for charity. Lou’s 2026 ascent will be only the third time in four decades that the this challenge has been attempted.

Marking 40 years since her father’s original challenge, Lou decided it was her turn - Dave will be there on the day to support her during the climb.

Lou said: "The Fire Walk is more than a physical endurance test - it is a powerful statement about resilience, remembrance, and the unseen battles faced by those who serve on the front line.

"Thank you to MSA The Safety Company and Haix for sponsoring the walk and providing me with fire kit, boots, and BA."
