Explosion on Commercial Road, Bulwell

Posted on 22 November 2022

Update: 16:30

We are now leaving the scene at Commercial Road, Bulwell. Crews from Stockhill, Arnold, Eastwood, Mansfield, Edwinstowe and Highfields attended what we now believe to be a gas bottle explosion in the basement of the property.

The incident has now been handed over the police. One individual is receiving treatment at the Queen’s Medical Centre for injuries that are not life threatening, directly related to the explosion.

Station Manager and Incident Commander, Richard Ellis, said “Thank you to local residents for your patience and understanding. The evacuation of the immediate area was done with the best intentions to keep people safe. Most of those evacuated are now being returned to their homes.”

Initial statement:

At 12:02pm on Tuesday 22 November, emergency services were called to an explosion at an end terrace property on Commercial Road, Bulwell.

The explosion has severely damaged the front ground floor of the property. Fire engines from Stockhill, Arnold, Eastwood, Mansfield, and Edwinstowe, plus the Specialist Rescue Unit from Highfields, are in attendance.

Other services, including Nottinghamshire Police, EMAS, and the gas and electric board are also on scene. A structural engineer is currently on route. We are working with colleagues to establish the cause of the explosion.

A man who was seriously injured in the incident, has since been taken to hospital via air ambulance.

Nine nearby properties were evacuated. Please avoid the area for now, and keep doors and windows closed.

A joint investigation is due to take place this afternoon (Tuesday 22 November).
