Fire Service Conduct High-Rise Training Exercise In Radford

Posted on 20 November 2025

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service conducted a training exercise in Radford this morning, which tested its response to an incident in a complex high-rise environment.

The exercise, which was named ‘Deep Rooted’, took place on Thursday 20 November at The Woodlands in Radford, and saw firefighters from West Bridgford, Stapleford, Stockhill and East Leake Fire Stations taking part, ensuring they’re ready for any real incidents like this that may come in.

The scenario saw firefighters deal with a flat fire on the 11th floor of the building, where they rescued four casualties - which were a mix of real people and training dummies.

Watch Manager Martin Hickling said: “Exercise Deep Rooted was developed to test our operational ability to responding to a fire in a high-rise building. All four fire crews responded within the targeted time and rescued all casualties from the flat.

“Incidents within a high-rise complex can sometimes present emergency service staff with challenges, which is something we aim to prevent as much as possible. Exercises like yesterday’s means we can train to the best of our ability and become comfortable and confident in this environment just in case we ever have a similar incident.

“Thank you to Nottingham City Council who helped us facilitate this exercise and for the local community for their patience.”

Councillor Jay Hayes, the Council’s Executive Member for Housing, said, “High-rise fire safety training such as this enables everyone to better respond in the unlikely event of a serious incident, and contributes to the safety of everyone in Nottingham.

“I’d like to thank the residents of Ash View and The Woodlands for their patience and consideration while the training was taking place.”
