Children Across Nottinghamshire Set To Benefit From New Educational Resource

Posted on 04 July 2024

Pupils across Nottinghamshire and beyond will now be safer than ever thanks to a new resource developed by agencies across the county.

Organisations such as Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service (NFRS) and Newark & Sherwood District Council have been working collaboratively for the first half of this year to produce a bespoke educational booklet that was first used at a two-week event last month, focusing on staying safe over the summer months.

The aim of the booklet is to take year-six children on an interactive journey that gives them an insight into how to stay safe from a range of risks – including fire, water, rural and road safety.

Other agencies involved in developing the booklet are Nottinghamshire Police, Via, Nottinghamshire County Council, The Sherwood Forest Trust, Hope UK, Lifeboats, Newark Community First Aid, and finally, StayWise.

We are pleased to report that StayWise will now be using this booklet as a national resource, which is now available for blue light users, teachers, and the public to access.

UK Programme Coordinator at StayWise, Natasha Neale, said: “StayWise brings together the educational resources of the emergency services and key safety-focused organisations. We have done this to support teachers and community safety practitioners in developing essential safety messages.

“Providing resources like this booklet nationally, facilitates a more effective, consistent and curriculum-linked way of imparting vital life skills to todays’ young people.

“This workbook, developed by NFRS, contains vital safety messaging as well as short activities such as word searches, mazes, and hazard identification tasks to engage pupils with their learning. It will support the work of emergency services and partners as part of multi-agency events and can act as an aid memoir to ensure that safety information is taken home and discussed with parents and carers.

“We would like to thank NFRS for their work on producing this booklet – it is a perfect resource for large summer engagement events – and we really hope it becomes of use to others around the country as we strive to keep communities safe.”

Amy Goulden, Head of Community Safety and Engagement at NFRS, said: “We are thrilled to have this piece of work recognised nationally by StayWise – not only has a lot of work gone into producing the booklet from NFRS and our partners, but it will also hopefully help with our ongoing prevention work we do to keep Nottinghamshire safe.

“We encourage emergency services and teachers to take advantage of this amazing booklet, especially as we lead up to the summer holidays, as it will give children all the information they need to know in order to stay safe whilst outdoors over the next few months.”

Thank you to Sarah Wilkinson Design for bringing our vision to life, which is now available to all on the StayWise website.
