Fire Service Introduces Body-Worn Video Cameras
Posted on 08 December 2025
As of today (Monday 8 December), Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) will begin using body-worn video cameras across its operational teams, following a successful trial at the end of 2024.
The initiative aims to improve the safety of both staff and the communities they serve, while also enhancing transparency and accountability during the incidents we attend.
The Service has invested in 60 Motorola V500 cameras, which will be worn by firefighters, senior officers, and fire safety inspectors. These cameras record both audio and visual footage and will be used during incident responses, investigations, and when evidential information is shared.
This new technology in the Service's inventory has come following a rise in attacks against emergency service workers across the country – according to the Ministry of Housing, communities and Local Government, there were 967 attacks on firefighters during operational incidents in 2023 – 2024 across England.
Group Manager Chris Emmott said: “Sadly, we’ve seen attacks on our staff and vehicles over the years, particularly during busier periods like bonfire night. These cameras are a step forward in protecting our teams and the public, and they will also help us learn from incidents and promote good practice across the organisation.
“We would like to reassure the communities of Nottinghamshire that these cameras have been implemented across the Service to protect both our staff and the public, with a view that this will be a positive step in supporting our frontline staff as they protect homes, businesses, and lives across the county.
“If you see a member of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service staff wearing a body-worn camera, please don’t be alarmed – ultimately it’s there to protect everyone involved.”
The cameras will be worn overtly, and staff will declare when recording is taking place. All footage will be managed in line with data protection regulations and the Service’s new Body-Worn Video Camera Policy and Procedure.
