Ashworth Close Fire Deemed As Accidental

Posted on 30 July 2025

The cause of a fatal fire on Ashworth Close, Sneinton, was determined at an inquest earlier today (Wednesday 30 July).

The inquest, which took place at Nottingham’s Coroner’s Court, heard how Ms Gail Tunstall died following a fire in her house.

Firefighters from London Road and Arnold Fire Station attended the incident on 7 June 2024 following a call at 21:36. Unfortunately, Ms Tunstall was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Assistant Coroner for Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire, Ms Wood, concluded that the cause of the fire was accidental.

Fire Investigator and Station Manager Chris Navin said: “We recommend that if anyone chooses to smoke to do so outside, however this is not always possible to achieve. If you have to smoke inside, smoking in bed or whilst tired isn’t advised as there is always an enhanced risk of injury.

“On behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service I would like to offer my sincere condolences to Ms Tunstall’s family and friends.

“Between 2012 to 2024, 28% of the fatal fires we attended were attributed to smoking materials, it’s a reminder of the risks involved, and we’re hoping to prevent any further tragedies.
