General Description of Post

To provide an efficient and effective Occupational Health and Fitness Service to all Service personnel.

Specific Duties

  1. Effectively leading the Occupational Health and Fitness Service to meet required standards and targets.
  2. Responsible for the supervision, support and development of the Occupational Team members.
  3. Undertake medicals, health screenings and other associated consultations to ensure compliance with appropriate legislation, policy and clinical governance.
  4. Ensure the maintenance of secure, accurate and relevant records relating to clinical care in line with the Access to Medical Reports Act 1988 and Access to Health Records Act 1990, and to act as the nominated Officer under Data Protection Legislation.
  5. Develop, implement and promote Policies and strategies which will enhance the Occupational Health and fitness of service employees.
  6. Prepare co-ordinate and when necessary present relevant training.
  7. To Co-ordinate and oversee the use of outside contractors such as the Service medical adviser and physiotherapist.
  8. Oversee pre-employment and statutory medical assessments, referring to Service medical adviser when clinically indicated.
  9. Oversee medical screening, including visual and audiometric testing, and offer appropriate advice and support where relevant
  10. Advise employees on matters relating to health, fitness, life-style and rehabilitation as appropriate.
  11. Liaise with HR and management regarding long-term sickness absence and advise on individual cases as appropriate.
  12. Develop and participate in educational courses giving information and guidance on health matters and generally promote good health and wellbeing.
  13. Establish and maintain links with local and national health bodies / networks and utilise outside sources of expertise and support wherever possible.
  14. Ensure that adequate supplies of appropriate consumables and equipment are available and maintained in a viable and safe condition.
  15. Attend relevant working groups and advise on Occupational Health matters
  16. Provide management information and reports as required.
  17. Manage the allocated budget for Occupational Health and Fitness, including the preparation of budget bids.
  18. Maintain effective working relationships with other key sections, most noticeably HR and Health and Safety Risk Management on issues of mutual interest.
  19. Attend and contribute to the Service Health, Safety and Welfare Committee.
  20. Liaise as necessary with the Service Health and Safety Advisor – with particular regard to event reports of mutual interest.
  21. Any other duties which may reasonably be regarded as within the nature of the duties, responsibilities and grade of the post as defined, subject to the proviso that normally any significant changes of a permanent nature should be incorporated into the job description in specific terms.

Specific health and safety responsibilities

  1. Determine by risk assessment the requirements throughout Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service for First Aid response, arrange training and refresher training and disseminate employee information on first aid availability.
  2. Ensure when episodes of work-related ill-health are identified that an event recording and reporting form is completed and submitted.

    To co-operate with Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue’s attempts to comply with health and safety legislation. Where appropriate you must safeguard the health and safety of all persons affected by the work activities you supervise at any premises you have control over.

    To work in a safe manner in which you have been trained and instructed and advise your line manager of any health and safety problems you become aware of.

    To familiarise yourself with the contents of the Service’s Written Safety Policy.

    To take proper care in handling, operation and safeguarding of any equipment, vehicles or appliance, used or issued by the Service or provided or issued by a third party for individual or collective use in the performance of the job holder’s duties
