General Description of Post
With exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to form strong and constructive relationships both between Departments and with partners and communities, the post holder will be responsible for supporting the delivery of prevention, education and engagement activities to those most at risk of fire and other emergencies.
The post holder will provide direction and innovation to design and deliver engagement activities which seek to support workforce diversity targets. Close working with other service delivery departments is essential to ensure community safety and engagement activities are good quality and aligned to strategic objectives.
With strong leadership skills, the ability to provide direction and leadership to a diverse team of specialists is essential. Designing and evaluating services based on evidence and evaluation activities to ensure that the team are reaching target audiences and are seeking continuous improvement from the activities they undertake.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership and Management
- Apply the leadership principles set out within the Core Code of Ethics to provide strong and consistent leadership to the team to support the successful delivery of strategy and plans relevant to the functional area including the development of departmental business plans.
- Apply principles relating to project management and evaluation to support continuous improvement of activities delivered by the function.
- Engage with colleagues to develop, review and disseminate policies and procedures relevant to the function.
- Responsible for managing functional area budgets.
- Represent the Service at relevant national, regional and local meetings relevant to the role.
- Effectively identify, manage and where necessary escalate risks to support effective, safe and compliant delivery of services.
Partnerships
- Maintain and develop effective partner relationships with local authorities, health services and voluntary sector partners to enhance understanding of communities and delivery of services. This includes exploring options to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of community safety and engagement activities.
- Ensure the Service is effectively using data (including from third party sources) to tailor and target services effectively. Including developing partner relationships to enhance data sharing ability.
Functional Responsibilities
- Lead and provide professional safeguarding advice supporting the Service to deliver its safeguarding obligations, both in the workplace and in Service delivery, working collaboratively with partners to share learning and experiences.
- Determine and provide the domestic risk profile and other risk profiles, in conjunction with the Business Intelligence Manager, for the delivery of proactive prevention activities, determining the effective use of physical and financial resources.
- To provide timely reports on Community safety and Safeguarding performance accessible to managers and members of the Combined Fire Authority.
- Any other duties which may reasonably be regarded as within the nature of the duties, responsibilities and grade of the post as defined, subject to the proviso that normally any significant changes of a permanent nature should be incorporated into the job description in specific terms.

- Health and safety risk management
To take reasonable care for your own health and safety at work and that of other persons who may be affected by your work activities.
To co-operate with Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue’s attempts to comply with health and safety legislation. Where appropriate you must safeguard the health and safety of all persons affected by the work activities you supervise at any premises you have control over.
To work in a safe manner in which you have been trained and instructed and advise your line manager of any health and safety problems you become aware of.
To familiarise yourself with the contents of the Service’s Written Safety Policy.
- Environmental risk management
To co-operate with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Services’ attempts to comply with environmental legislation
To participate in necessary training to enable you to play a full role in implementing Service environmental objectives and to work in an environmentally responsible way.
- Use of equipment and other appliances
To take proper care in handling, operation and safeguarding of any equipment, vehicles or appliance, used or issued by the Service or provided or issued by a third party for individual or collective use in the performance of the job holder’s duties.
