Rotational Internship (6–12 Months)

For Young People Aged 18–25

Job Purpose

The NFRS Internship provides a paid, developmental opportunity for young people aged 18–25 who are passionate about leadership, inclusion, community engagement, and creating positive social impact. The intern will undertake a personalised rotational programme across various departments, shaped around their aspirations and availability.

This internship aims to empower young leaders, increase workforce diversity, and offer meaningful experience within a major public‑service organisation.

Key Responsibilities

The intern will work alongside NFRS staff to gain hands‑on experience in selected departments. Responsibilities may include:

  1. Organisational Development & Inclusion
    • Contributing to inclusion, diversity, and cultural initiatives.
    • Supporting organisational development projects that improve ways of working.
  2. Community Engagement & Education
    • Assisting with community programmes, outreach events, and engagement initiatives.
    • Supporting campaigns that promote fire safety and community awareness.(Aligned with the internship’s development focus and the nature of NFRS’s community‑based roles.)
  3. Administration & Project Support
    • Preparing documents, presentations, and reports (basic IT competence required).
    • Supporting day‑to‑day tasks within chosen departments.
  4. Operational Exposure (Non‑Firefighting)
    • Attending “Have a Go Days” to gain insight into firefighter training and operational activity.
  5. Corporate Communication
    • Help create relevant media around Safety campaigns
    • Help create content that will help target minority groups to increase attraction rates in wholetime recruitment campaigns

Person Specification

Essential

  • Aged 18–25.
  • Demonstrates passion for leadership, diversity, inclusion, or community impact.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Basic IT competence (email, document creation, presentations).
  • Willingness to learn and engage with new experiences.

Desirable

  • Experience in community work, youth leadership, or social impact initiatives.
  • Interest in public service, emergency services, or local government.

Pre‑Employment Requirements

  • DBS check (required).
  • Police vetting if based at Joint Headquarters.

Training & Development

The internship provides:

  • Tailored training across one or more departments.
  • Supervision and mentoring from NFRS staff.
  • Professional development opportunities aligned with the intern’s long‑term goals.

Duration

  • Minimum 6 months, maximum 12 months.
  • Duration depends on applicant’s availability and development needs.
