Flooding and Weather

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has an important role to play in protecting local people in the event of a major incident.

This could be a man-made event such as an explosion or a train crash, or it could be a natural disaster such as severe flooding, high winds or a prolonged period of hot, dry weather.

In the event of a major fire or other incident, or challenging weather conditions that affect local services, we always advise you to 'Go In, Stay In, Tune In'. BBC local radio (BBC Radio Nottingham – 95.1 and 103.8 FM) will broadcast messages to keep you up-to-date with the developing situation and advise you of any action you need to take.

A number of other organisations have published advice on preparing for an incident, such as protecting your home against flooding. They will also give you information about current incidents that may affect you. Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Local Resilience Forum gives practical advice on preparing for, and coping during, extreme weather conditions.

The Environment Agency has the latest flood warnings and information on its website - you can also call the Environment Agency Flood Line on 0845 988 1188  for the latest information on flood risks in your area. The Met Office website has up-to-date weather information.

Businesses also need to plan how they would cope if a major incident affected their operations and what steps they would need to take to recover as quickly as possible. This could be through staff being unable to get to their place of work due to the weather, premises lost or severely damaged by fire or major flood, an extended period without power or fuel, or interruptions to the supply chain, for example. Even a relatively brief interruption to normal operations can have a major impact on a business, particularly smaller companies.

The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Local Resilience Forum has some advice to help you prepare a Business Continuity Plan that could prove invaluable in a situation like this. You can also find out more about keeping your business safe from fire on our Business Safety pages.
