Pay - Wholetime:

  • There are three rates of pay for firefighters - trainee, development and competent.  
  • A trainee, wholetime firefighter earns a basic annual salary of £22,459 and hourly rate of £10.26.
  • A firefighter in development earns £23,394 and an hourly rate of £10.68.
  • A fully competent firefighter earns £29,934 a year, and an hourly rate of £13.67.

As a firefighter, once you are fully competent, there will be opportunities to progress into managerial roles. A competent crew manager earns £33,187 a year as a basic salary, whilst a competent watch manager attracts a salary of £37,112 per annum.

Pay - On-Call:

  • On-call firefighters get paid a yearly 'retainer fee' - this is regardless of how many calls they attend.
  • They then get an hourly rate for the attendance of calls and training (at least two hours a week after the development stage) - which differs depending on which rate (trainee, development or competent) they are on.
  • Regardless of pay rate, all on-call firefighters get paid a £3.90 disturbance fee everytime they are paged and attend the station.


  • Trainee firefighters attract an annual retainer fee of £2,224 per annum. This is for full cover, however, with most trainees getting a 75% retainer - £1668 per annum. They then get paid £10.15 per hour.
  • Firefighters in development attract an annual retained fee of £2,316 per annum for full cover, or £1,737 for part cover. The hourly rate for development is £10.58.
  • The rate for competent firefighters is then £2,964 per annum (full cover) and £2,223 (part cover). The hourly rate is £13.53.


  • Cover is the amount of time, each week, that a firefighter is on-call. A full cover firefighter provides more than 120 hours of cover each week, whilst a part cover firefighter provides between 84 and 120 each week. Part cover firefighters therefore attract a slightly smaller retainer fee.

Frequently Asked Question - What is the difference between trainee, development and competent?

Whilst at our Service Development Centre in Ollerton, on their basic training course, firefighters are classed as trainees. This is the first stage of their training.

Once firefighters have left the training centre, and have started responding to calls with their station colleagues, they become firefighters in development. This is the second stage of their training, and normally takes two years.

Once the development stage is complete, firefighters become competent - and attract the higher rate of pay.
