Out-of-hours contact details

Our Communications Team operates an on-call system for very urgent enquiries relating to large or major events or incidents.  The Communications Team can be reached by calling 0777 958 5838.  All routine enquiries will be dealt with during normal office hours.

In office hours we can help with:

  • interview requests relating to NFRS press releases and news stories
  • filming requests on any NFRS property
  • requests from TV producers and documentary makers
  • information about incidents.  Please note, we need the location of the incident before we can provide any details.  The information shared will be in line with current legislation.

Information we cannot help with:

  • specific details about an incident which would reveal sensitive, confidential information about a person.

Engaging with us on social media:

We recognise that social media has an important part to play in communicating and engaging with the public and press, and for some this is their preferred method of communication.

We have several corporate accounts which are used to promote the work of the Service and update the public in times of a large-scale incident.  It is recommended journalists follow these accounts for the latest information:

We acknowledge that everyone has a legal right to freedom of speech, in line with other UK laws such as the Communications Act, Computer Misuse Act, Defamation Act and the Contempt of Court Act.

We encourage discussion and engagement on social media; however, we also have duty of care to our staff and the wider public.

Therefore, we reserve the right to take action on social media posts, comments or messages that are:

  • abusive
  • harassing
  • threatening
  • racist, sexist or homophobic including the use of language, swear words or words intended to cause fear or harm
  • defamatory
  • in contempt of court, breaking any other law or inciting others to break law(s)
  • spam
  • featuring inappropriate images or video.

In the first instance, the Communications Team will report and/or hide or delete the post and, if necessary, will issue a warning to the author via direct message or email.

If inappropriate or persistent contact from the author continues, the Communications Team may take the decision to block the user from the corporate page.

We may also report the issue to the police if it amounts to abuse or harassment or if a criminal offence is suspected to have been committed.

We also reserve the right to take legal action in the case of defamatory material.
