This week marks one of the most important festivals in the Sikh calendar and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) is doing its bit to ensure celebrations go off safely. Vaisakhi celebrates a new harvest season and also marks the beginning of a new year. Due to the nature of traditional Vaisakhi celebrations, accidents resulting in fire and injury can be common.

Firefighters Help Students Achieve Award

A group of youngsters, who have been working with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service as part of their Duke of Edinburgh awards, will mark the end of the course with a special Pass Out Parade. The ceremony, on 22 April, is similar to the parade carried out by trainee firefighters on completion of their training and will involve them carrying out a drill, doing a presentation about their course and receiving their certificates.

Misterton Fire Station Dads’ Sessions

Dads and male carers have been making the most of new facilities at Misterton Fire Station after Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service teamed up with Sure Start to launch a new dads’ group. After a major refurbishment at the station at the beginning of the year, Bassettlaw’s Rural Sure Start team launched a new monthly event called Just 4 Men. The sessions are aimed at dads and male carers and are aimed at giving them, and their children, the chance to meet up and socialise together.

Multi-Agency Event Spreads Safety Messages

Almost 1,200 youngsters from across the county are currently taking part in a multi-agency event aimed at helping children to stay safe. The two-week Safety Zone event, now in its 16th year, is being held at The National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont from 19 to 30 April.

New Policy Succeeds In Cutting Down On False Alarms

An initiative aimed at cutting the number of unwanted fire signals – previously known as false alarms – has been hailed a huge success after figures revealed a drop of more than a quarter. The number of unwanted fire signals received by the Service had been increasing year on year and these false alarms were threatening to impact on NFRS’s ability to provide essential services.

Competition Winners Join Fire Crew

Two lucky youngsters have scooped the chance to experience a day in the life of a firefighter as part of a national competition. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service will host 14-year-olds Rachael Hobster and Charlotte Eggleston at Newark Fire Station on 15 May after Rachael won top prize in a promotion organised by Sugar magazine and CLG – the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Many fans will choose to watch the matches in pubs and other licensed premises and the increased capacity in these venues may present increased fire safety risks.

Fire Service Launch New Easy To Read Leaflet

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has joined forces with Sutton Centre Community College and Willow Wood Day Centre in Sutton to develop a new easy to read safety leaflet. The Keeping Safe From Fire document contains fire safety advice, including kitchen safety, cigarette safety and what to do in the event of a fire.

Firefighters from across the region will be descending on Highfields Fire Station this week to battle it out for the chance to represent their Service in a national extrication competition. The East Midlands Regional Extrication Challenge on Saturday 12 June will feature crews from all five counties within the East Midlands as they work against the clock to demonstrate their skills in rescuing a trapped casualty from a crashed car.

Women Urged To Take The Wheel For Charity

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has teamed up with The Fire Fighters Charity to give women throughout the county the unique opportunity to get behind the wheel of some weird and wonderful vehicles. On 12 September the Charity will host a Ladies Driving Challenge at Newark Showground and those taking part will be given the chance to get to grips with vehicles such as a tank, diggers, HGVs and, of course, fire engines.

Making Children Safer For Summer

Over 400 Year 6 schoolchildren will descend on Worksop Fire Station this week as part of an initiative aimed at teaching youngsters how to stay safe over the summer holidays. The MACS (Making All Children Safe) Week event will involve firefighters working with representatives from partner agencies to educate children about the dangers of playing near water, fire and burns prevention, road safety, healthy eating and first aid.
