Applying for a job
Please note that the Service does not accept speculative applications or CVs for any jobs. This applies to both individual applicants and to employment agencies. General job enquiries can be made to the Human Resources department on 0115 967 5842 or by email.
Trainee firefighters
Applicants for Trainee Firefighter roles can access our recruitment website to obtain up-to-date information about the selection process or future recruitment campaigns. Recruitment opportunities across the East Midlands will soon be published on a regional website that includes vacancies in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire.
Retained firefighters
Selection events take place at weekends once every three months. Application packs can be requested from our Human Resources department. If you are interested in becoming a retained firefighter we strongly recommend you visit your nearest retained section to find out more about the role and the qualities and skills you will need, prior to application.
Transfers between fire and rescue services
Competent firefighters interested in transferring to the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service from other services should register their interest by email. A full selection process will apply. Opportunities for transfer to roles above Firefighter are advertised on the Chief Fire Officers' Association website.
Support and Control roles
All vacancies are advertised on our recruitment website. The HR department can send job details by post if requested.
Please note that will not accept a CV in place of a completed application form.
Guidance on completing an application can be found in the Guidance for completing your application online document.
A role-based Job Description and Person Specification is available for each vacancy and applicants must be able to meet the ‘essential’ requirements of the Person Specification to be shortlisted. In some cases, where we receive a large number of applications from people who meet the essential criteria, the Service may also take into account the ‘desirable’ criteria when finalising the interview shortlist. Dependent upon the requirements of the job, candidates invited for interview may be required to undertake functional job tests as part of the selection process.
Reasonable adjustments will be made for applicants with a disability as part of the selection process. If you have a disability, as defined in the Equality Act 2010, you must disclose the nature of your disability and the type of adjustment that may be required on the confidential monitoring form attached to the application. Such information will be treated in confidence and will be detached from the general application form prior to the shortlisting process. Find out more about arrangements for applicants with a disability.
Conditions
Offers of appointment to Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service will be conditional on the following, and a contract will not be issued until the Service has received satisfactory responses:
- Medical assessment
Following an offer of appointment, applicants will be subject to medical assessment. This takes the form of a pre-employment medical questionnaire and an appointment with our Occupational Health team. For all operational firefighter roles, this will also involve a fitness test. It should be noted that screening for substance misuse (drugs and alcohol) will form part of the pre-employment medical.
- References
The Service will require two references, one of which must be from your most recent employer (if applicable).
- Criminal disclosure checks
Some roles require applicants to undergo a Criminal Disclosure Record check as a condition of appointment. If this is the case, this will be detailed in the job advertisement.
